Merry Valentine's Day?

    How soon is too soon?

    How much is enough?

How much is too much, and

How long do we have to wait until you just pack it up and give it a rest until next year?

    Chatty is just wondering.

Chatty walks most every day (because her body is a temple, and that temple can snarf down a few more calories without packing on more pounds if it is exercised each day), and she noticed all the signs of the seasons going up day by day.

Chatty just LOVES Christmas lights. But not before Halloween, thanks. And not after January 6th, which as we all know is the twelfth day of Christmas, and the Epiphany. After that, Chatty is pretty much DONE with the lights until next year.

But there’s one house that still has the fake Halloween cobwebs draped over the cacti; the cobwebs are fighting for superiority over the Thanksgiving pumpkins and scarecrows, who are looking askance at the reindeer and the Nativity scene. It’s January 10th. Seriously. All still there. In one yard. Chatty appreciates the enthusiasm for each holiday, but wonders about the follow-through here.

There's another guy in Chatty’s neighborhood who is so proud of his display that he has a CD promoting it.
Chatty admits that his display is quite something. She appreciates the manpower, dedication and kilowatt-hours that combine to bring this extravaganza to fruition. There are lighted angels on the roof above the garage doors – they surround a US flag, also made of lights. The angels pulse and glow and keep time with a computer rendition of Trans Siberian Orchestra songs. The US flag also pulses. Very special. Then, there’s the ferris wheel that takes the cute teddy bears around and around, right behind the train that circles endlessly around the Victorian Christmas Carolers and Santa’s workshop – with THE NATIVITY SCENE right smack in the midst of all these delights.

Excuse Chatty for wondering about the mixed signals here.

And now, it’s January 10th, 2008, and the display is still, well…displayed. Frankly, it wasn’t tasteful when it went up the day after Thanksgiving, and now Chatty is just fed up.

So, she’s wondering what YOU think. When should we start celebrating, decoration-wise? How much should we celebrate? And when should we give it a rest?

    Inquiring minds want to knowl

Well Chatty, The Redneck Princess agrees with you. Although she can appreciate a good dose of holiday splendor, what happened to simplicity? She wonders why people feel the need to take things so far? Of course, she just might be jealous too since the Redneck Prince has never wired the outside of the Redneck Castle for electricity for said lights like he promised years ago. This kind of torks the Redneck Princess off each year when she gets to witness everyone else's Christmas lights! But, really, people do take things WAY too far! That reminds me, I need to look in the garage for my 50 foot blow up cupid yard ornament. ; )

I know you jest, but "blow up cupid"....hmmmmm...I like the sound of that, as in "The Day I Blew Up Cupid." There's a poem or a story or at least a blog topic in there somewhere, Princess!

But winter is soooo long. Some of that has to be fun. I've taken down/unplugged most of the Christmas lights, leaving the red and white ones on. If the weather holds here, I'll chip out the rest of the plastic decorations and exchange them for the next set of decorations which I'll start putting up next weekend.

I totally agree with you, but letting your views be known can backfire. I have one neighbor who found out that the neighbor across the street (said neighbors not friendly!) disliked any lights other than white ones. First neighbor now dispays red Christmas lights year round!

I love your blog and will start reading it more often. I didn't realize you were writing every day. I agree 100% with you about the holiday displays. I also love the lights but after Jan 6th, it's time to either turn them off or take them down.

I read all your entries and am now up to date.
