Salty and Sour
The Weekly Word Challenge words this week are “salty” and “sour”.
Yippee!
Chatty loves salt – oh, my - does Chatty ever love salt!
And not just plain old salt. Oh no, Chatty also likes “pretty salt” - and Chatty truly believes that different salts taste different.
Yes.
Chatty has been dreaming of ordering some smoked salt…but can’t decide whether to try hickory or apple wood…it’s these little decisions that add a certain piquancy to life…even a saltiness, if you will.
OK. Sorry.
Chatty already has black salt, and pink salt, and gray salt, and gray salt with lavender, and rock kosher salt and…well, you get the picture – in fact, here it is:

Chatty also loves to make pickles. She pickles all SORTS of things – obvious things like cucumbers, and not-so-obvious things like turnips and garlic and mushrooms. Next up for pickling – carrots, cauliflower, cabbage and onions.
It is The Wiz's opinion that Chatty will pickle just about anything. He has actually suggested to the four-leggers that they run and hide when Chatty pulls out the vinegar and the big bowl…just to be on the safe side…
Chatty also makes oil-cured ripe olives from the tree in her front yard. Next month, for the first time she will be making brined green olives from the same tree, and also the oil-cured ripe ones a month or two after that (after they turn dark purple), but for the purposes of this Weekly Word Challenge, the black oil-cured will have to do. They are nice and salty. The turnips and cucumbers are salty and a little sour, and the garlic and mushrooms are salty and just a touch sweet and sour (from the balsamic vinegar Chatty used).

All are delicious, and if anyone out there is interested, Chatty will be happy to forward the recipes.
Please note the turnips are supposed to be pink – because the recipe calls for a beet – but Chatty’s local market HAD NO BEETS. Can you believe that? NO beets. *Sigh*
Meanwhile, thanks to Tink for choosing two words dear to Chatty’s heart this week!

Chatty! You have an olive tree that produces your very own olives??!! That settles it, I'm moving in!
Great job on the WWC. You and I must get together so you can teach me some of those pickling skills

I'll make you a deal: you can come to my house for the margaritas, and I will come to your house for the yummy appetizers. My very good friend TOWM wants to come, too.
Kcinnova wants to try some lavendar salt!! And both of those smoked salts sound delicious!!

I had no idea that salt came in all those colors. I love salty things too, but not pickled, as I posted over at my place. However, I am impressed with all the work you are doing to make all those pickled foods. Add that to blogging and beading and you are one busy woman!

Nicely done. I am intrigued by the mushrooms and garlic. I have had pickled carrots, and cauliflower before, Yum.

If you love salt, pickles and olives, you would fit RIGHT in at Chatty's house, Aunt Jackie! And, you haven't lived - and this goes for everyone who commented (even kcinnova, who doesn't like pickles)- until you have tasted good pickled mushrooms. To me, they are always the best indicator of an excellent antipasto platter. They are not at all "pickle-y" - especially if your idea of pickles are kosher dills. They are just wonderful! So is the pickled garlic, btw. I'm just sayin'...

Love the plate of salt Chatty, but you can keep your pickles! Especially the mushrooms - those I'm allergic to!

There is more than one kind of salt?! I love that picture btw. Although now I want to run out and buy the different kinds so I can do my own taste test. Well played!
