Another Week, Another Wordzzle...
It’s time for more Wordzzles!
This week’s mini-challenge asks us to use the following five words in a short short story:
drag race
poppy seed
swing from a star
John Denver
diagram
Here’s Chatty’s entry:
“Madge quivered with anger when the tinny loudspeakers belched forth Frank Sinatra’s version of “Would You Like to Swing from a Star”…because that was Bing Crosby’s song! It was as painful as listening to someone else singing John Denver’s ”Rocky Mountain High” – or eating poppy seed cake with loose dentures. Speaking of painful, she mused - glaring sideways at the man who had brought her to the drag races - perhaps she should have drawn him a diagram of first date protocol. As Leroy rose to scream his support for car number 37, Madge realized that this relationship had died aborning…”
The 10-word entry asks us to use these words:
spam
problematic
flower girl
splurge
milk
orphanage
lyrics
politics
ice cream cone
Is Chatty just math-challenged, or are there only 9 words this week?
In any case, here’s her 9-word entry:
“The whole situation was problematic. As a social worker, Jane felt the politics of her job obligated her to keep things simple, and to choose a flower girl from the orphanage where she spent so much time doling out milk, Spam™, and the occasional ice cream cone. But, in her heart of hearts, she had wanted to splurge – to have a fabulous wedding - with her nieces and nephew preceding her down the aisle bearing baskets of flowers and the wedding rings on a velvet pillow; a magnificent multi-layered cake; and Josh Groban serenading the happy couple with his own music and lyrics. But, Jane didn’t have the money for a grand cake, or for a fabulous party; her family lived thousands of miles away…and she certainly didn’t know Josh Groban. Actually, the best she could hope for was that little Lucy wouldn’t gorge on the cheese-and-cracker appetizers and throw up during the reception in the church basement…”
That’s all Chatty’s got, Wordzzle-wise. If you want to play, there are details at Raven's site. Everyone is welcome!
Finally:
As Hurricane Ike fast approaches the coast, I know we all continue to hold the people of Texas in our thoughts. May they ride out this devastating storm with no injuries or loss of life…

Alas, it is not you who is math challenged, but me. My apologies.
These are both wonderful. I feel sad for poor Jane. I can relate to her, unfortunately. As for Madge... she can take care of herself. Well done.

Aw what a shame Jane couldn't have the weddding she'd dreamed of.
You did a great job on both!

It would seem that Leroy was a bit of a dolt. And let's hope that Lucy will keep her lunch down!

Great story and use of the ten words that were only nine. I feel sorry for the poor flower girl.

I would let Frank sing one of Bing's songs, but nobody else.
Love the poppy seeds and loose dentures line too.
Great Wordzzles!

This was a great Wordzzle read-Jane is a character I think many can relate to and found myself hoping somehow she would get that dream wedding.

My family loves Ol' blue eyes. I can relate to the poppy seed under the dentures, torture.

First dates from hell.. I've had those.
I loved both of these... luckily the chees and crackers are after the ceremony and she,s not in danger of throwing up in her flower girl basket.

Chatty, your use of words is highly impressive! I'm still cracking up over Spam (which is quite good fried for breakfast over a campfire)!
