An open letter of apology to Donovan McNabb from an Arizonan
Dear Mr. McNabb:
I am appalled, embarrassed and ashamed that two “adults” (at least chronologically) who CALL themselves Arizona Cardinals fans took steps to destroy your lawn, to frighten your wife and children, and to provide “bad sportsmanship” with a new low.
I am an Arizona Cardinals fan, and as such, I cannot apologize ENOUGH for what these hooligans did.
I am sure that Kurt Warner – who (like you), is a good man, an astounding athlete, and a good sportsman - is miserable about this - especially as he was singled out by name as a part of the atrocity that occurred at your home. I also trust and believe that all the other members of the Cardinals team are similarly saddened and angered by this event.
What makes this incident even worse is the fact that you chose Arizona as a place to live during the off-season. I suppose that your neighbors - who know and like you - are even more upset than I am – but it would be a close call.
I am enraged. Your family was IN your home when two scum-sucking bottom-feeders chose to pour DIESEL FUEL on your lawn, spelling out “GO KURT” and “GO CARDS”. Then, they lit a match - and your yard was in flames.
This goes FAR beyond loyalty to one’s team. This goes far beyond anything I can think of. Concepts like decency, respect, the appreciation of life in general - and sportsmanship in particular – were trampled upon - and we are all diminished by this single act.
I know that it was easy to replace the lawn – and I thank God that your house was not damaged – but mere damage to property does not begin to describe this event.
PEOPLE! WAKE UP!
It is one thing to support your team, whatever that team may be. It is quite another thing to risk lives – to cause damage – to disrespect – to sadden – to endanger that which we call “good sportsmanship” for ANY reason – much less for misplaced loyalty. Or worse yet - for “fun”.
It seems that in addition to being so atrociously wrong about how to show support for one’s team, these thugs also proved how incredibly stupid they are (as if we didn’t already know) by leaving a box with one of their names and a partial address on your premises. Apparently, as I write this, they have been booked and released.
Mr. McNabb, I know that you have probably already taken the high road here – but I don’t. I think these “men” (and I use the term as loosely as possible) should be held accountable for MUCH MORE than the damage to your lawn.
They endangered you and your family.
They disrespected a fine man, and damaged his home.
They brought shame to Arizona Cardinals fans everywhere.
They brought back the nightmare memories of things burning on a person's lawn in the middle of the night.
They should serve time in jail.
I can only hope that you and your family will not bear a grudge against the people of Arizona – Cardinals fans though we may be – and that you will not feel it necessary to move away.
We would miss you.
And, I look forward to watching you and your fellow Eagles cut a wide swath though the NFL next season!

Chatty, I did not know anything about this awful occurrence, but I *DO* hope you sent this in to your newspaper. It deserves to be printed for all to see.

First, Congrats to the Cards for their spot in the Superbowl.
Second. That was spot on and well worded. It is a shame that some people are just, well, stupid.

What an embarrassment. Sounds like McNabb was very mature about it though. How would they have found out where he lives?

Hi - thanks for leaving a comment.
We are fairly open and friendly out here - everybody pretty much knows where Donovan lives - we know where Kurt Warner lives, too -and many others - all the Cardinals, and people like Ali and Barkley...apparently this is a mecca for sports figures. It's just that 99.9999% of us would never DREAM of bothering them - much less desecrating their property! The thing that gets me is that Donovan lives in a GATED community in Chandler - how did they get in? And how did they have the time to toss around all that fuel without anyone noticing? Where was the security you pay for when you live in a gated community? It's not a pretty thought...and I sincerely hope it was a once-in-a-lifetime occurence...
